There are so many types of diets out there that it can be quite confusing for people to choose one that's right for them. Just remember that not all people are the same and while a certain type of diet can work for one person, there is a very good chance that it won't provide the same results to another. To know the most appropriate diet plan for you, always consult a professional dietician or nutritionist.

The Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet conceived by Dr. Robert Atkins, is arguably one of the more popular diets in recent years. The Atkins diet considers carbohydrates and trans fats as the culprit for most cases of obesity. The Atkins diet focuses on a lean protein diet, a careful intake of carbohydrates, and vitamin supplements.

The Atkins diet is base on initially cutting out virtually all carbohydrates, then adding a few grams of carbs until you reach your goal weight. Once you reach your goal, you can increase your carbohydrate intake until you reach the point where you can sustain your goal weight. The drawback with the Atkins diet is that a low-carb diet is hard to sustain, and there are some questions about the long-term health effects of such a diet.

The Beverly Hills Diet

The Beverly Hills Diet is a relatively questionable diet plan which emphasizes the correct combination of foods to aid in natural weight loss. It claims that specific reactions of food chemicals, such as enzymes, aid in burning fat in the body. Central to this plan is the abstinence from protein during the initial eleven days, during which time only fruit is allowed. Carbohydrates can be taken on the eleventh day while protein can be taken on the nineteenth. This diet is not based on any medical evidence though and nutritionists claim that it deprives people of essential nutrients.

The Body for Life Diet

The Body for Life Diet is a fitness and weight loss program that emphasizes correct eating habits as well as exercise, aerobics and weight-lifting. Meals are broken into six small meals a day. There is good variety in the meals, so nutrient deficiency is rare. The carbohydrates are usually taken earlier in the day, in order for them to be utilized the rest of the day. Weight-loss is not as dramatic as with other diets, but the plan is more balanced. Moreover, because of the emphasis on exercise, the plan is generally considered well-balanced. It usually lasts for only twelve weeks and so is not really a long-term diet program, although it could be with proper planning.

The Bodybuilding Diet

The Bodybuilding Diet focuses on producing muscle mass. This by itself can eliminate fat over time, but the emphasis is on supplementing a body workout regimen, rather than altering one's dietary habit. This diet focuses on the high intake of protein and complex carbohydrates.

The High Protein Diet

The High Protein Diet is quite similar to the Atkins Diet, but emphasizes on eating almost double the amount of protein intake. It's quite controversial because many experts believe it to be harmful and unbalanced. Its ability to provide immediate weight loss to those who follow it, however, makes it extremely popular.

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet is not a strict diet but more of a lifestyle change. It is influenced by the observed healthy lifestyle of those living in the Mediterranean region. The diet consists of eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, moderate intake of fish and low intake of meats and cheese. An active lifestyle is also required.

The South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet discriminates against bad carbohydrates, but unlike Atkins, also warns against the consumption of saturated animal fats. The diet is made by Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist who was not satisfied with the high fat content of the Atkins diet.

The South Beach diet gained extreme popularity around the same time as the low-carb revolution. The South Beach diet isn't a low-carb diet per se; rather it follow the glycemic index and is based on eating foods that are low on the GI scale.

The Zone Diet

The Zone Diet is a diet plan that focuses on the correct proportional intake of carbohydrates, protein and fat to induce the correct balance of hormones which affect hunger and metabolism. It does so by balancing proportions of different food groups, and eating certain food groups together. The Zone's philosophy is that the key to successful weight loss is balancing insulin, which can be achieved by reducing carbohydrate intake and emphasizing low-fat proteins and nonsaturated fats.

The Isagenix diet

The Isagenix diet involves a total body cleanse. In the pre-cleanse phase, Isagenex shakes and soups are used to replace two meals a day. During two cleanse days, a special drink is ingested four times each day, and Isagenix snacks are eaten up to six times each day. For the rest of the week, two servings of shake or soup replace two of your three meals. This is followed by two additional cleanse days. Those on the Isagenix weight loss diet typically find it to be a fast diet that produces significant weight loss.

The Cabbage Soup diet

The Cabbage Soup diet has been used by dieters for years. This diet includes many versions but the simple one is that if you eat cabbage soup when you are hungry it will fill you up and will help you stay on low calorie diet. While you are on cabbage soup diet you must not take oily, fatty foodstuffs. This diet has very low calories. Therefore cabbage diet is among the best diets to lose weight.

The Sonoma diet

The Sonoma diet was first prepared by Dr. Connie Gutterson. This diet includes antioxidant vegetables, juicy fruits like blueberries, spinach, whole grains and little almond oil. You can even add a glass of red wine. Sonoma diet is also approved as one of the best diets to lose weight.

Slim Fast diet

Slim Fast diet is very helpful in controlling hunger for more than four hours. Slim fast diet is balanced, nutritional and rich in calcium and proteins. The Slim-Fast Diet plan is planned for dieter to take six times in day. You can add fruits, yogurt and cottage cheese. Fresh vegetables, meats and nuts are also a part of slim fast diet. It is not only diet cautious but also gives you a good flavor and taste. It can be considered as the best diet plan to lose weight especially for teenagers.

Negative Calorie diet

Negative calorie diet is less of a diet and more like diet helper. It consists of a list of foodstuffs whose net calorie account is less than total calories taken to digest them. These include high roughages, low fats, fruits and vegetables. Roughage is key content of negative calorie diet. The calorie output here is negative thus it will help losing weight.
